Upcoming Feature: The Taxman’s Tech Troubles

VIENNA, VA., March 22, 2016)— With tax season looming, FCW's lead feature in the March 30th issue is "The Taxman's Tech Troubles," which outlines the technology woes the IRS is facing both in the view of the general public and behind closed doors.

FCW and "The Taxman's Tech Troubles" article author Zach Noble are available for further inquiries or interviews. Contact znoble@1105media.com or (703)576-7081 for more information.

A preview of "The Taxman's Tech Troubles":

The IRS spends $2.5 billion annually on information technology across more than 20 major systems, yet it still relies on a central data processing setup that went online in the 1960s to keep its revenue-collecting cogs turning. The IRS' IT problems are manifold: not enough money, political pressure, technical constraints, a lack of skilled tech professionals and the tax code itself.

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen has asked for more money, and he's hopeful he can push legislation to save the IT employees he'll soon otherwise lose. But the code itself continues to knot up his plans.

FCW staff writer Zach Noble notes that only a few of the IT woes at the IRS are visible to the general public (e.g. The "Get Transcript" tool hack). Under the surface, the agency is struggling to modernize its creaky tech, feeling the strain of a budget crunch that forces the agency to abandon new IT because of the costs of keeping its old technology running.

About FCW
FCW's editorial mission is to provide federal technology executives with the information, insights, and strategies necessary to successfully navigate the complex world of federal business. By providing federal technology executives with the "who" and "what" they need to know to get things done, FCW delivers access to a powerful, hard-to-reach audience that controls the technology purchasing in federal government. https://fcw.com

Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly to Deliver Keynote at ACQUIRE 2016

(VIENNA, VA, March 8, 2016)-1105 Media, Inc. is excited to announce that Gabrielle "Gabby" Giffords, former Arizona Congresswoman, and Mark Kelly, retired astronaut and U.S. Navy Captain, will deliver a keynote address at the ACQUIRE Conference & Expo on June 9, 2016 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.

Distinguished public servants and models of dedication and resilience, Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly represent the very essence of American heroism. Kelly flew 39 combat missions over Iraq and Kuwait during the first Gulf War, spent over 50 days in orbit and served as the commander of Space Shuttle Endeavour on its final flight. The youngest woman ever elected to the Arizona State Senate, Giffords represented her community in the Arizona Legislature from 2000-2005, and then in Congress from 2006-2012, consistently ranking as one of the most centrist legislators in Congress.

On January 8, 2011, an assassination attempt at an event with constituents in Tucson, Arizona, left Giffords severely wounded, shot in the head from near point blank range. Since then, the couple has inspired individuals around the world with their story of hope and courage in the wake of tragedy, serving as a symbol for the possibility of second chances.

"There is no more fitting way to kick off this inaugural event than by hearing from Mark Kelly and Gabby Giffords, a couple who has inspired millions," said Anne A. Armstrong, Chief Content Officer at 1105 Media. "Kelly and Giffords show by example what determination, a commitment to public service and a belief in mission can accomplish."

Produced by the media teams behind the FCW, GCN, Washington Technology, Defense Systems and Federal Soup brands, ACQUIRE is a new two-day conference & EXPO for government, military and contractor professionals looking to deliver on agency missions. Covering a program’s entire lifecycle-from policy setting to end user experience-ACQUIRE offers thought leadership, training courses from a diverse range of government agencies and an exhibit hall packed with vendors. Featuring leading providers of products, solutions and services to the government market, the EXPO floor has multiple pavilions: Information Technology, Acquisition Management, Professional Services and Office Management-plus a Federal consumer experience in Happy Fed.

Registration is free for government and military professionals. Sponsorships and booth sales for ACQUIRE are available. Please visit: https://ACQUIREshow.com.

This event is co-located with WEST 2016—co-sponsored by AFCEA International and the U.S. Naval Institute, and will take place at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California.

Speakers include keynote Rear Admiral David H. Lewis, Commander, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), U.S. Navy; Bill Bonwit, Department Head for the Command and Control (C2) SPAWAR, Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific); Greg Shaffer, Assistant Chief Engineer, Mission Engineering, National Competency Lead ISR/IO, SPAWAR; and Steve Soules and Greg Wenzel, C4ISR experts from Booz Allen Hamilton.
