Nassau County Sheriff’s Office Participates in Active Shooter Drill

Earlier this week, the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office participated in an active shooter drill at Yulee High School, next to Yulee middle school. After the drill, the officers will meet and discuss what needs to change to ensure a proper response.

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies participated in an active shooter drill at Yulee High School earlier this week. The school hosts around 1,200 students.

The drill was a scenario where an active shooter was on campus targeting students. The purpose of the drill was to evaluate how they responded, and work on what they could do better next time.

The Fernandina Beach Police Department held an active shooter drill with realistic actors in the halls last week.

Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said it’s a requirement that all county agencies practice to ensure they can respond in the best way possible during an attack.

“Unfortunately, it’s the norm now. We have to be prepared now for any situation, and the things around our country and the state of Florida. It can happen anywhere,” Leeper said. “If you aren’t prepared, you’re going to lose a lot of lives as a result of that.”

Following the drill, they will go over what needs to change in their response.
