Michigan District Uses Grant to Purchase Barricade Locks for All Classroom Doors

Grand Blanc Community Schools is using part of a grant from the Michigan State Police School Safety Initiative to install more than a thousand barricade locks, one for each classroom door in the district.

Grand Blanc Community Schools is ensuring safety on campuses by installing a barricade lock on every classroom door in the district—a total of more than a thousand.

In the beginning of April, GBCS received $243,838 in funding via the Michigan State Police School Safety Initiative. Part of the funding will go toward the installation of the barricade locks.

The barricade device will allow teachers to reinforce their locked doors in case of an emergency school lockdown. The pin used to keep the barricade in place renders the classroom door strong, sturdy and impossible to open.

According to the district, all lockdown procedures will remain the same. The barricade lock is just an additional barrier against a potential intruder.

Currently, almost 70 barricade locks have already been installed at Reid Elementary, Perry Innovation Center and Children’s Garden Preschool and Latchkey. Almost 1,400 will be in place across the district by the end of the summer.
